Samsung Confirms It Is In Talks With Tesla To Become Its Camera Module Supplier
According to Reuters, Samsung Electro-Mechanics confirmed that it is currently in talks with Tesla over the possible supply of camera modules, but could not disclose the size or amount of the deal at this time.
Samsung Electro-Mechanics added in a regulatory filing that the company will continue to work on advancing and building diverse camera modules.
Last year, Samsung introduced its first automotive camera sensor, the ISOCELL Auto 4AC. industry reports say Samsung may have struck a $436 million deal with Tesla to provide the camera for the Tesla Cybertruck electric pickup truck.
Earlier this year, another report showed that Samsung Electro-Mechanics won the Cybertruck camera contract, beating out LG Innotek, which later confirmed that it was not in the running.
Samsung Electro-Mechanics is also supplying camera modules for smartphones, but the products for electric cars have a higher value and so would allow the company to increase profits further. According to TheElec, there are eight camera modules in the Tesla tram and car camera modules are more expensive than those used in smartphones, with more camera modules used per vehicle.
