Tesla Model Y breaks all-time record in Norway in March
Tesla had a strong showing in Norway's electric vehicle market, with record sales in March and nearly half of the market share. This was largely due to strong sales of its Model Y models.
According to the Norwegian Road Federation (OFV), Tesla sold approximately 5,639 Model Ys in March, breaking the all-time high of 5,315 Model 3s sold in March 2019, as of March 26. Tesla sold a total of 5,993 new vehicles in March, also surpassing the monthly sales record of 5,822 new vehicles sold in March 2019. It's worth noting that there were still a few days left in March that were not counted.
In the first three months of 2023, Tesla leads the way in passenger car sales in Norway, with 7,565 units sold as of March 26. Germany's Volkswagen is in second place, with 3,072 units sold so far this year. Of all passenger cars, the Model Y is the best-selling model, with 6,911 units sold as of March 26.
BilNytt.no calculates that Tesla's market share in Norway in March was about 46.4 percent. Based on statistics from January to March 26, Tesla's market share in Norway was 34.1 percent, up from 12.2 percent in 2022.
Tesla's big sales increase in March had a lot to do with its price cuts. The U.S. automaker lowered the price of the Model Y by 120,000 Norwegian kroner (IT House note: currently about $79,212), which has been well received by consumers.
Tesla has been the market leader for electric cars in Norway, and this year it reached a new milestone.
